SWINDON Wildcats player-coach Aaron Nell was thrilled that a crunch timeout paid dividends for his troops as they swept Invicta Dynamos aside 7-4 at home in NIHL South One this evening.

With Invicta having tied the scores at 2-2 just after the half-hour mark at the Link Centre, Nell took the opportunity to issue a rallying cry to the home players.

That provided the spark they needed as Jordan Kelsall restored Swindon’s lead within 40 seconds of play resuming before Max Birbraer and Jan Kostal also hit the back of the net to make it three goals in three minutes at the end of the second period.

Swindon actually built up a 7-2 cushion at one stage before Dynamos rallied late on but Nell was pleased that his side were able to raise their game at a crucial period.

“For five or 10 minutes we were just getting outplayed and you could see that equaliser coming. Our habits were bad and we just needed to get back to it and luckily we did,” said Nell.

“We got the third and fourth goals through hard work and five minutes before that we weren’t doing that. Hard work brings results.

“I wouldn’t say it was a 7-2 game with 10 minutes to go. It was tight but luckily we got some good goals and some goals in bunches too, that was important. I am very happy with the win.”

Phil Hill broke the deadlock for Swindon with just 21 seconds on the clock and although that was cancelled out by Scott Bailey, Chris Jones restored the home side’s lead before the first buzzer.

Adam Rehak’s strike saw parity return to the scoreboard midway through the second period before the Cats ran riot after Nell’s timeout rally.

A second goal each from Jones and Kostal made it 7-2 early in the third period and although Tom Ralph and Callum Fowler grabbed late consolations for Dynamos, the Cats were more than comfortable winners.

“Maybe we scored that first goal too quickly as we didn’t follow it up and they got back into the game. It’s important that once you have that first one early to get that second one,” said Nell.

“It is about starting the game well and although we scored really quick, we then went off it a little bit.

“We have got some really good players and the best thing about us so far is that we have spread our scoring and we are not relying on one guy.

“That’s the team we built, we knew we wanted to score all through our line-up and we have had that.”
