SWINDON Wildcats’ winning run came to an end this evening in an overtime defeat at Peterborough Phantoms in NIHL South One.
Aaron Nell’s troops headed to Planet Ice seeking a ninth consecutive victory in all competitions.
However, after the two sides could not be separate over the scheduled hour, Leigh Jamieson’s strike 42 seconds into overtime saw the Cats fall to just a second loss of the 2017-18 campaign, although they did have the consolation of taking a point in defeat.
Owen Griffiths’ strike saw Swindon trail 1-0 at the end of the first period and although player-coach Nell pulled his side level early in the second, Phantoms got their noses in front again before the buzzer through Rob Ferrara.
The Cats edged a tight final period and Luc Johnson levelled the scores to send the game into overtime but the visitors failed to build on that momentum in the additional five minutes and Jamieson’s goal ensured it was Peterborough who took the spoils.
Swindon return to home ice tomorrow and face Hull Pirates in the Autumn Trophy.
