STAND-IN head coach Ryan Aldridge was pleased to see actions speak louder than words as the Swindon Wildcats romped to their biggest NIHL Sotuh One victory of the season at home to Cardiff Fire tonight.

Swindon walloped the Welsh side 15-1 at the Link Centre as they signed off at home before the pre-Christmas break in emphatic style.

Aldridge, in charge of the team while head coach Aaron Nell is assisting the Great Britain youth squad at the World Championships in Scotland, said: “We talked this week in practice about being clinical around the net and they were tonight so it was good.

“When you play against a team that is a little bit lower-skilled than you, you can drop to that level and we just talked about.

“We need to take some momentum into tomorrow (against Invicta) and I think we did. For the 60 minutes we did what was needed and spread the goals throughout the line-up.

“Throughout the whole team I think they all played well and there were some really nice goals scored.’’

The Wildcats assumed a control they were never to lose as they opened the scoring on 5:43, with Max Birbraer netted off an assist from Stevie Whitfield.

Birbraer added a second on 11:59, courtesy of work from Ben Nethersell and Chris Jones and Phil Hill notched the third at 17:04, assisted by Jan Kostal and Mikey Power.

It was 4-0 at 18:56 as Harvey Robson found the net after build-up work from Hill and Kostal and Hill got the second-period scoring 12 seconds in to make it 5-0.

Birbraer completed his hat-trick at 20:24 before Neil Liddiard and Luc Johnson combined to allow Floyd Taylor to add the seventh at 23:43.

Cardiff made their one contribution to the scoresheet on 32 minutes but normal service was resumed as Joseph Hazeldine notched at 35:28 after the work from Kostal and Hill.

Toms Rutkis set up Liddiard for the next before the second break and after it, Jones netted from Hazeldine’s assist at 41:23.

Just over 30 seconds later, Taylor added another before Rutkis registered at 44:17.

Kostal added another two at 45:02 and 49:33 and Hazeldine wrapped up the rout at 59:42.

The Cats make the trip to Invicta Dynamos on Sunday night (5.15pm) and Aldridge added: “Tomorrow is going to be a completely different game.

“It’s going to be tough in tight areas around the net and it’s going to be a battle. But we’ve just talked about it and said whoever works the hardest will win the game.

“It’s not going to be a skilled game so we’ll have to go and work hard tomorrow.

Wildcats will check on the fitness of netminder Matt Smital, who picked up a knock this evening, before tomorrow night’s match.
