OLLIE Stone says he can’t wait to get out on the ice as Swindon Wildcats bid to break their 27-year wait to lift the Autumn Trophy again at the Link Centre tonight.

Last Friday, Aaron Nell's side collected a two-goal advantage in the opening leg against Basingstoke Bison in Hampshire with a 3-1 win and now aim to seal the deal at home.

Stone, who is in his second year at the club, says he is itching to play – especially in front of a home crowd.

It will be the first time the club have hosted the second leg of a cup competition, with their 2005 final versus Romford the last time the club got to such a showpiece contest.

Stone was eight years old back then and the former Ridgeway School pupil admits it is about time the club claimed some silverware to reward their loyal fanbase.

“It’s going to be a big crowd, which will be amazing. Hopefully the crowd can help us get going and we can start well,” he said.

“The fans have been amazing. They have been up and down the country with us, the best example was when we played Telford (in the NIHL Cup semi-final last month). We had 50 or so fans and they were amazing.

“It was a midweek night and they travelled all that way. We came away with a great result, which was down to them.

“The crowd makes a huge difference. When there is a huge crowd it really gets you going and pushes you on, when the building is loud there is a good feeling in the room.”

Despite the two-goal advantage from the opening leg seven days ago, Stone says there is still plenty of work ahead of him and his team-mates this evening.

The youngster has iced 30 times this season, in which he has scored one goal and collected three assists.

“We are going into the game with a two-goal lead, which is good, knowing we are already up but we can’t be complacent, we have to work hard,” he added.

“I’ve come on a lot since the start of the season at the start I wasn’t playing too much but now I am playing more.

“I’m playing in these cup games, I’ve worked closely with Aaron and he has helped me to improve.

“My confidence on the ice has got better, we just needed to get that good feeling back in me.”
