A Chessington councillor has started a campaign to get businesses behind a plaque or monument to commemorate the Olympics coming to Kingston.

During the summer Games, Kingston hosted the hugely successful cycle races and time trial events that saw cyclists cheered through the streets by excited crowds.

Councillor Shiraz Mirza was at the start of the torch relay at the Hook Centre where he saw former Olympic rower James Cracknell become the first torchbearer of the borough.

Coun Mirza said: “This is the only Olympics I have ever seen so closely. And a lot of it took place in Kingston. It made me feel very proud.

“I think we should have some kind of legacy in Kingston to mark the cycle races and torch being here.”

He said his own Shiraz Miraz Trust would be able to help fund some of it. Send your ideas to shiraz.mirza@councillors.kingston.gov.uk or call 020 8241 9938.
