Manchester United secured a second-placed finish in the Premier League by holding West Ham to a goalless draw at the London Stadium.

Luke Shaw nearly scored his first goal for United in the opening period and tempers flared towards the end of the match, but visiting boss Jose Mourinho will not have cared too much.

His side, who can no longer be caught by Tottenham, made sure of a top-two spot for the first time since their title-winning season of 2012-13, which was the last campaign under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Star man – Adrian

The Spaniard has been preferred to England goalkeeper Joe Hart in recent games and he repaid David Moyes’ faith in him by shutting out Manchester United. Adrian produced a brilliant double save to keep out efforts from Alexis Sanchez and Shaw before pushing away a long-range Sanchez strike on the stroke of half-time. He had a more comfortable second half as United struggled to carve out opportunities.

In with the crowd

Manchester United fans offered their support to Ferguson in their first match since it was announced their former manager had suffered a brain haemorrhage. Ferguson’s name rang from the away end at least half an hour before kick-off and again once the game was under way, while there were a number of placards and banners offering well-wishes to the Scot as he continues his recovery. Tributes aside, it was another flat atmosphere at the London Stadium.

Data point

Since Ferguson retired no Premier League side have played out more 0-0 draws than Manchester United. They have been involved in 19 goalless stalemates, the same number as Southampton.
