SWINDON racer Josh Day is taking the positives from the opening weekend of the 2016 Thundersport GB season after crossing the line first in two of the three races.

In spite of the strong performances on new Michelin tyres at Brands Hatch, Day was awarded just a single race victory after being disqualified in race one for the misuse of tyre warmers.

In the third and final race, Day was hit with technical issues, forcing him to retire.

He said: “It’s been a bit up and down this weekend. We had the highs of winning but then the lows of the mechanical problem in race three.

“We can take away the knowledge that we were consistently the fastest out there.

“We came away with 25 points and even though it should’ve been 75, I think we know now that we have the speed to run at the front and win races.

“When you have a weekend like this, you have to just take the positives and move forward, so now we have to just make sure we come back stronger at Donington and make sure we’re back on the top of the podium in each race.”

The 27-year-old, who was born in Cirencester, has lived in Swindon for the past eight years with partner Becky and their four-year-old son Harrison.

A reduced opening race due to the weather was also stopped briefly due to a crash but Day still managed to take the chequered flag before his disqualification.

He bounced back from that disappointment on Sunday morning to take victory and clinch the fastest lap in race two after passing the leading Kawasaki of Lee Williams on lap six.

But technical issues on the second lap of the final race of the weekend saw Day’s weekend end early.

Day, who has been vehicle paint-sprayer since leaving school at 16, works at DingMaster vehicle repairs in Swindon when he’s not racing around the tracks of Great Britain.

He said: “It’s a hectic lifestyle. I find it hard with time off. I use all my holiday with racing.

“When I’m not working here, I am at the track, so I don’t really get a break.”

Day’s next race will be at the opening round of the NG Road Racing series at Brands Hatch on March 19-20 where he will run his own 600 in Crank Racing colours.
