Bassett boss Low after hammering
WOOTTON Bassett director of rugby Alan Low admitted his side ‘simply did not have what was required’ as they crashed to a 66-5 defeat at High Wycombe.
Following a strong pre-season Bassett were keen to send out a statement of intent in what was Low’s first game in charge, however they were outclassed by a superior Wycombe side on Southern Counties North’s opening weekend.
Bassett made a solid start, containing the Wycombe line within their own half, but soon allowed them to break through for the opening score.
Whilst there were signs of potential from Bassett’s attack, the home team’s resilience shone through as they built a commanding lead throughout the first half before extending in further in the second, although David Hogg did cross for Bassett to get them on the board.
Low always knew his team were in for a tough test but after suffering a disappointing reverse is already looking to the future.
“Obviously I’m disappointed with the result today, it is always tough going away from home but today we simply did not have what was required,” he said.
“There were many elements of our performance which were very encouraging, once we generated some tempo High Wycombe could not compete but we failed to keep the pressure on.
“My focus now is get the boys ready for the big match next Saturday against Swindon College. I know they will not be happy with a result like that, and I have every confidence that they will turn things around.
“We have got a great opportunity with both senior teams playing at home next weekend, and I have every confidence we can come away with two important wins.”
Bassett’s second string fared better as they secured a 41-16 victory over Sutton Benger thanks to two tries from both Grant Murdock and Marcus Neil and one each from Lee Meogor, Dom McCabe and Tom Bloxsham.
Elsewhere in the division, Swindon College Old Boys’ first game at Southern Counties level didn’t go to plan as they lost 13-10 at home to Ready Abbey.
