Time out for Old Boys
SWINDON College Old Boys will be enjoying some well-planned rest this weekend after withdrawing from this season’s cup competitions.
After winning promotion from the Berks/Bucks & Oxon Premier last season the Nationwide side have found things difficult in their first Southern Counties North season, and in anticipation of their struggles the club decided to withdraw from the cup competitions despite being handed a place at the beginning of the campaign.
The Old Boys players will have enjoyed a two-week break by the time they return to league action against Alchester next weekend which chairman Martin Peaple believes is the right path to take.
“Because of going up for this season we decided to withdraw from the cup because we knew it would be tough,” he said.
“We wanted to have some spare weekends to give the guys a good rest and make sure we are all ready for the league games which is our major focus.
“You can’t put your second team in the cup competitions in place of your firsts so we wanted to give the players a break for two weeks and it should be good.
“By the time we are back for our next league game we might be able to have a few of the guys back who have been injured and that will mean we can focus on getting some vital wins.”
The Old Boys squad will be together at the club’s Pig on the Hill clubhouse this weekend for a team meeting which Peaple is hoping will help iron out a few of their issues.
“We’ve got a players’ meeting going on which is based around the Heineken Cup games over the weekend at that will help I’m sure,” he said.
“We’ll watch the games and talk about our season and make sure everyone’s happy and hopefully we might be able to sort a few things.”
