Late Knott try saves Swindon

CONNAL Knott dived over for a late try to earn Swindon a 15-15 home draw with Devizes - but the Greenbridge Road side were left to wonder what might have been.

Cameron Brown had previously touched down to give his side the advantage in a game in which Swindon had plenty of chances to kill their Wiltshire rivals off but failed to take them.

Skipper Adam Westall missed the conversion following the late score which levelled matters but a disappointed Brown admitted Swindon should have been well out of sight before then.

“We didn’t have our best game because we were missing a few lads and our lineout wasn’t really working all that well, while they had a very good catch and drive which we conceded a try from.

“The backs looked pretty sharp but we could have finished off a few more chances which we let slip and we should have had it won by half-time.

“We got the late try which was great but Adam missed the conversion which was disappointing. It was a kick he would usually expect to make too so I think he was a bit down about that. It was a team performance though so we all have to take a share of the blame.

“From their (Devizes) response you could see they were pretty happy with a draw but we were disappointed because it should have been a five-point game for us.”

The result leaves Swindon fourth in the South West 1 East table with one game left before Christmas and Brown believes just a few tweaks are needed to see his side challenging at the top once again.

“We could be a bit more clinical and be better at finishing of our tries but we have some new players in the backs who are coming on well,” he said.

“Our scrum is good but we need to get our lineout going again and if we can do that we will be okay.

“We have let a couple of games slip where we could have taken all the points but we are there or there abouts. If a few more things can click then I think we will get ourselves going after Christmas.”
