Minety Academy see off Wootton Bassett Colts
5:30am Thursday 30th January 2014 in Rugby
Minety Academy strolled to a 20-5 victory over Wootton Bassett Colts.
With the league game two weeks ago postponed, the sides agreed that the result would stand for both the Under-18s Knock Out Cup match and the league fixture.
Minety adapted quickly to the heavy conditions scoring after only four minutes when centre Ben Kingston cut through the Bassett defence to score.
Minety went 10 points clear six minutes later when a well rehearsed catch and dive from a line-out resulted in Garin Garland touching down.
Bassett woke up as the half progressed and lay siege to the Minety line but were kept at bay by a determined defence.
In the second half, accurate kicking from Minety’s Garland pinned Bassett in their on 22m.
Twice Bassett were forced to hold Minety up at the try line.
Bassett tried to run the ball out but were met with solid tackles from Minety’s Ollie Wild and James Talyor.
Bassett half-backs were put under constant pressure from the Minety back row and eventually it told as Kingston charged down a kick to score his second under the posts with Scott Lees adding the conversion.
Minety continued the pressure and a penalty from Lees increased their lead to 20-0.
Owain Kinsman got a well-earned consolation try for Bassett in the dying stages, his first of the season.
Minety now travel to Dorchester in the next round and close the gap on Bassett in league.
