Swindon can adapt to wet conditions - Brown

SWINDON director of rugby John Brown doesn’t think his team’s ball-in-hand style will hold them back in the wet weather conditions.

Using Swindon’s bonus-point win over Marlow as evidence, Brown backed the Greenbridge Road side to change their game if required against Witney on Saturday.

“We back ourselves to play good rugby and our good ball players aren’t suited to the wet weather,” he said.

“We will have to look at what Witney bring on Saturday but we can change our style if we have to. If you look at the Marlow game that was in horrible conditions but we adapted and got the win.”

Swindon have been less affected than some of their South West One East rivals with regards to their match preparation, as they have been training on an all-weather pitch.

“The situation is not ideal for preparation but some clubs don’t even have that (the all weather) so we’re fortunate and very grateful that we can do use it,” said Brown.

At Witney the game ended in a dramatic draw, with the home side kicking a late penalty to share the points. There seems to be no separating Swindon and the Oxfordshire club, as they currently have the same points total. Brown said there would be little in Saturday’s game as well.

“We have progressed since we last played them but I still think it will be very, very close, the home advantage will obviously play a part,” he said.

“Our games with them over the last few seasons have all been close and I don’t see Saturday being any different.”

However, any talk of a result is hypothetical at this stage as the weather is likely to win.

Swindon’s captain Adam Westall doubted the game would going ahead when speaking to the Advertiser earlier in the week and Brown was similarly lacking in optimism.

He said: “We’re definitely hopeful, but the forecast is pretty poor for tomorrow so I don’t know.”
