SWINDON College Old Boys finally managed to break their duck in Southern Counties North with a win 27-21 against High Wycombe.

Until Saturday, Old Boys results sheet read played 18, lost 18 and they actually had a negative points difference after failing to field a side earlier in the season.

Now the Pipers Way side can at least point to their one win as evidence that their season at this level was not entirely fruitless.

Old Boys chairman Martin Peaple told the Advertiser it was a result that was celebrated long into the night by his side.

“It’s a good feeling and good result, we got a bonus point out of it as well so an all round good day. Though when they scored within 30 seconds your heart starts to think here we go again,” said Peaple “There were quite a few hangovers on Sunday and we put on a free bar and everybody made full use of that, it was a good celebration to be fair.”

Welcoming back long-term absentees Josh Haynes and Luke Wills, Old Boys couldn’t have got off to a worse start, conceding a soft try through an interception within 30 seconds of kick-off.

Though a Charlie Grabe penalty and a converted try from an interception gave Old Boys the lead within 20 minutes.

The hosts would surrender the advatange before the half with Wycombe’s inside centre running in a converted score to make it 10-14 after 40 minutes.

Grabe brought Old Boys back into the game early in the second after Wills had forced his opposite number to cough the ball up around halfway.

Given their record this season it was no surprise that Old Boys were unable to stop the visitors scoring again to make it 21-17.

Though late scores from Gareth Davis and Joe Gill were out of character as Old Boys saw off sustained pressure to finally get their first win.

Peaple said the result was the high point of what he described as a “freak season”.

“It’s just been one of those seasons,” said Peaple. “Now people who have been injured are back and the people that have gone away travelling are back, we should be there or thereabouts next season.

“We’ve been unlucky really, against Bassett twice, Reading Abbey only narrowly beat us.

“There’s been one or two others at home without the wind blowing or the ref looking the right way that might have been different.

“It was certainly a relief (to get the win), it was tight, High Wycombe were pushing at the end, and inside our five metre line but we held on.”
