RUGBY: No repeat heroics for Swindon

SWINDON’S Dave Cox said his side were poor as they came back to earn a rare draw at home to Cheltenham.

It was almost the same story for Swindon as last week when they came back to win with the last kick against Buckingham but this time Adam Westall could not provide the finishing touch.

The Greenbridge Road side did take the lead after an early sin binning in the visitors pack gave Jack Badminton the opportunity to show his finishing ability, whihc he took well.

Cheltenham then scored three tries, two converted, before Cox got one back leaving Swindon down 19-12 at the break.

Cheltenham added to that lead early in the second period and at 27-12 were certainly favourites. A Sean Lynn try followed by another Cheltenham sin bin gave Swindon the chance to get back into the game.

Despite the lack of structure that Swindon had showed the team’s individual quality shone through with Gary Williamson crashing over to bring the hosts back within a score.

Josh Herbert’s penalty gave Cheltenham some breathing room but Connal Knott chased down Westall’s kick over the top to draw Swindon level.

Westall missed the conversion for a win that Cox felt his side hardly deserved.

“We didn’t play particularly well, we picked up for 25-30 minutes of second half. It was a bit of an odd one, we performed poorly all around to be honest,” Cox told the Advertiser.

“They were conditions that suited us, it was good weather and a good opportunity for us to play our rugby.”

“We played poorly and managed score 29 ponts, it shows what could have been had we played to the best of our abilities.”

Cox believes that Swindon’s inconsistent numbers at training, a problem he admitted being part of, is a crucial factor in their patchy form.

“We’ve not been getting the numbers at training because of work and family. Adam Westall said we’re a team that relies on structure and we don’t get that without training.

“It’s literally because where we’re getting toward the end of the season and everyone’s fatigued and tired.”
