DAVE Floyd, Royal Wootton Bassett’s forwards coach, said his side pulled off two-thirds of a good performance in their 36-26 win at Drifters on Saturday.

Tries from Hamish Keith, Derry Thomas, Dave Hogg, and a brace from youngster Josh Lewanituva proved enough for the visiting Bassett in a game liitered with penalties.

Drifters remain below the Ballard’s Ash boys but the game was more about performance for Bassett.

It was this aspect that disappointed Floyd who thought Bassett did not capitalise on their two early scores.

“We made a good start and for the first try in 10 minutes stringing play well together and scored a converted try within five minutes of that then let back into the game a bit really,” Floyd told the Advertiser.

“It was a good start, a good finish but the bit in the middle we lost tour teeth a little bit.”

Bassett conceded a lot penalties around the ruck but went in at the half 18-7 up. Floyd admitted the number of penalties affected the way Bassett played for the game’s middle third, leaving his players worried about going into contact for fear of conceding another one.

Bassett did snap back into gear eventually to seal the mid-table clash. Floyd knows his team can perform better but was pleased to see them get the win.

“We’ve got no illusions of where we are, we have a lot of potential, what we’re working on training is starting to come through,” he said.

“Wining becomes a habit, instead of losing the better teams can pull through even though they’re not as their best.

“Last 20 minutes showed we could do really. If someone had seen the last 20 minutes they wouldn’t have believed that was the score, we were like a different side.”

Bassett firsts don’t play again this weekend but the seconds are in the Dorset & Wilts second team cup final.

From next season Bassett will be putting out a third adult team, with the idea of integrating colts into senior rugby. As a result the club are recruiting, anyone interested should contact Steve Milner on 07919 410755.
