SWINDON scrum-half Connal Knott says he will be happy with a fourth place finish given the season of transition that Swindon have gone through.

If Knott’s side win against Witney on Saturday they will finish in fourth – the same position they ended last season in. However, since the end of last season the coaching staff and several members of the playing squad have changed, giving the team running out at Greenbridge Road in yellow and blue a new look.

It has not been the smoothest sailing this term for Swindon, the leading trio of Oxford, Towcestrians and Windsor are well ahead of them and the story of their season has been one of fits and starts.

At no point have Swindon found a consistent rhythm and winning runs have been accompanied by stop-start performances and punctuated by patches of poor form – most notably after December and January when they Greenbridge Roaders failed to win in five games.

Such inconsistencies are to be expected somewhat and the narrative is not all negative. Despite the loss of several key players youngsters such as Mike Thompson have grown into their roles as first team players.

Knott believes that the new coaching staff have done a good job and is aiming for a win and fourth place to add some sheen to the campaign.

“We’ve got Witney who if they beat us they can go above us. Overall, on paper it’s the same as last season, if we finish fourth I’ll be happy with that. Things have changed, players have come and gone,” said Knott.

“The new coaches, who have come in have done a great job, to be honest the real problem has been training, getting numbers.

“It’s difficult for some of the guys at the moment, they’re having kids and getting married whereas we’ve been tight team before.

“If we can get a win then it tops the season then and finish the same as last season, we haven’t gained anything and haven’t lost anything.

“Important for the lads and for the coaches, they’ve done a great job and it’s been a disappointing season for them”

Swindon have a clean bill of health for Saturday’s game and will be hoping to go one better than the draw they managed with their visitors in the return game back in October.
