SWINDON St George coach Carl Baker thinks his side have an attack to match anyone in the West of England Premier League.

This weekend St George travel to Gloucester to take on the second-placed Warriors. After three games the Greenbridge Road side are still in search of their first win and they are anticipating no favours from a historically tough Gloucester side.

Despite the run of defeats, those at the club have been encouraged with the development of the team this year.

St George have not had the problem of previous seasons, where they have struggled to score tries, but it seems they are having difficulty defending their own line.

Baker was quick to acknowledge the issue and said it was something the players had been working on in training.

“We’ve changed our gameplan for this weekend from recent weeks, with the line-up we have we’re hoping it pays dividends, “ he told the Advertiser.

“The problem was a fractured line, it doesn’t matter how quick our line speed is, if some people are breaking too fast it leads to gaps.

“Our attacking play is getting better and better, last year we weren’t scoring, this year we are. Now it’s our defence, our line is leaving gaps. If we get that defensive line right we’ll be okay.

“We’ve got the attack to match any team in this league and once we get that defence right we’ll get the victories.”

Baker knows the team at Gloucester from his time in the league and understands the threat Saturday’s opposition hold.

“They’re a very strong team, always have been, what we need to do is make sure they don’t break through, they’ve got a couple of very, very quick players, and we need to close them out wide and stay tight inline,” he said.

“We have only beaten them once, it’s always a hard game, it’s all dependent on us not leaving gaps for them to walk through.”

St George will be without Callum Watkins and John Singfield, who both have hamstring issues, as well as Macauley Reynolds, who is unavailable. However, they do welcome back Neil Holman for his first league game of the season.
