SWINDON St George vice-captain Gwyn Jenkins believes the time is right for his side to pick up their first win of the season.

St George travel to Somerset Vikings, the team they played in the first game of the season, with hope of breaking their duck.

Vikings have only won twice this season and the Swindon side are vastly improved from the team that lost that opening game 34-20, providing belief it could be St George’s weekend.

Jenkins believes the team has come together, worked on the technical aspects of their game that had been holding them back and are set to claim an elusive first win.

“The whole team in itself have come on leaps and bounds, our captain, George Cowley, has made us a better team, basically the whole team and structure has improved vastly, going into the last game of the season we’re really up for it,” said Jenkins.

“It’s our weekend to get the first win, the vibe from the whole team is fantastic, even in training it’s 100% effort, all of us are buzzing.

“We’ve made silly mistakes, which is understandable in a development season, we’re very close to securing a win, most of the teams in our league have noticed our vast improvement in how we’re making our stance.

“Team morale is key, if we stick together and play a hard game, concentrate in the first 20 minutes and stay consistent and do the basics, we’ll get our first win.

“Now we’ve gelled and know each and our game phases, that’s going to be in our favour. It’s our fitness and defensive line that are our weaknesses and we’ve come on leaps and bounds this season in regard of those.

“We’ve been working on that defensive line and our communication with head coach Phil Whammy, he has been drilling us on that.”

For the trip this weekend St George will be Carl Baker who is away but Jenkins is backing his side to rally round without key man.

“We’ve had key players missing but we work as a team, we have a strong squad this weekend, a few injuries, but we’re team a and we’ll adapt to it, we have powerful forward line which is going to be a shock to Somerset.

“It is a miss without Carl because he’s a big Aussie, but he’ll be keeping in contact.”
