SWINDON St George vice-captain Gwyn Jenkins believes his team’s first win of the season creates a platform for a title-push next season.

St George travelled down to Bridgwater winless but looking to end their season on a high. The Greenbridge Road side returned with a 38-22 victory as a prize for their improved performances in the West of England Premier over the course of the term.

Vikings beat St George in the campaign’s curtain-raiser but after that loss captain George Cowley knew his team had the potential to improve and was encouraged by their performance. Margins of defeat decreased as the games ticked by and belief grew the win would come.

Jenkins said last week in the Advertiser Saturday was their time to get it and having it achieved it he believes St George can push again next term.

“We finished the season on a high and this is a platform for next season,” Jenkins told the Advertiser.

“This was our development season, the last game of the season that was the moment it clicked, we all worked together and hopefully we’ll take this on to next season, and fingers crossed we could win the league.

“We’ve set the standard now of the game we’d like to play and we can hopefully raise the bar for next season and hit the ground running with the same core of the team and morale up.

“Everything finally came together, as I said last week we’ve all gelled, and we all knew we were capable of doing it, it’s great we finally got that first win, and it was thoroughly deserved.

“From the KO our games heads were on, we had our lapses but we soon rectified it. Somerset were shocked by the way we played against them, we’ve come on heaps since that first game and I’d like to congratulate every single one of those players on Saturday.”

Tries from Bruce Vauntantanako (two), John Synchfield (two), Macauley Reynolds, Jenkins, as well as penalty try forced by the vice-captain were more than enough to see St George to their first win.

Despite conceding the first try Jenkins was always confident St George would overrun their opponents.

“We were running them all over the pitch, there try was a defensive error, a lack of concentration but we soon amended that,” he said.

“From the first half we were all over them, we could have scored more tries, that was definitely our best performance as a team.”
