SEAN Millwaters is expecting Supermarine to hold their own when they step up a league this weekend, despite the loss of club captain Matt Dickens over the summer.

Dickens, a key figure in Marine’s promotion push last season, has moved on to play for Henley who play in National League South Two.

George Cowley has been promoted to club captain with Killian Spain coming in as vice-captain and head coach Millwaters has added strength to his squad ahead of a tough season, including forward Richard White.

“It’s a big step up for us obviously but I think we are ready for it,” he said.

“One of our best players from last season and club captain Matt Dickens has left and goes with all our blessings.

“As a result our build-up to the new season has been disrupted however I think we have the team to do well in this league.

“We are not ready to compete for the league just yet but our aim is to compete in the league and come the end of the season be comfortable in mid-table.”

Supermarine kick off their season in Southern Counties South against North Dorset on Saturday and Millwaters will be hoping for a big start from his side.

“Last year North Dorset’s away form was not brilliant so I am hopeful that will continue through to this season.

“They have quite a big set of forwards who like to throw the ball and that suits us because we are a rugby-playing side.

“I am sure they will come to us thinking this is a certain win for them with bonus points as well, but if we go at them early and play hard I think we can get a result.”
