SWINDON College Old Boys have enjoyed a fine start to the season and continued their winning ways with a 33-15 win at Chesham.

The tries for visitors side were spread among the team with Gareth Davies, Stuart Knight, Charlie Grabe, who also added eight points with the boot, Liam Spillane and Dan Thomas all going over the line.

Old Boys maintained their 100 per cent start to the season with the bonus point win and currently sit top of the Berks, Bucks and Oxon Premier Division.

“We pretty much bossed the games from the outset,” said head coach Mark Lea.

“Chesham did score a breakaway try early on but we were soon in control of the game and I don’t think the result looked in doubt.

“We kept the ball quite tight to the to the scrum and that allowed us to release our backs.

“That is always the way we want to play, a running style of rugby.”

Old Boys kicked off their season with a 25-21 win over Westbury in the Dorset & Wilts 1st XV Vase before opening their league campaign with a 17-8 win over Chipping Norton.

Old Boys struggled last term in Southern Counties North and resumed their league campaign at a lower level following relegation but harbour hopes of an immediate return.

The club have been getting in excess of 30 players at training this season which is a reason Lea has given for his sides good start.

“In my time at the club, which is about 20 years, we have never had the numbers we have been getting to training,” added Lea.

“As I have mentioned before we had those two weeks with the weddings, I always feared getting through those couple of weeks.

“We probably haven’t been getting the performances we wanted but that is because myself and the director of rugby are perfectionists, but this season we seem to be turning games into wins.”
