ROYAL Wootton Bassett’s one sided display over Milton Keynes was overshadowed by a bad injury to the visitor’s Jake Ronaldson which brought the contest to a premature end.

In the 61st minute the Ronaldson took a very hard tackle which left him with a badly broken leg and the decision was taken to bring the play to an end, ensuring he could be treated properly.

The right winger, who was taken away by ambulance, underwent surgery on Sunday and was expected to return home on Monday.

The result was already out of the reach of the visitors as Bassett had racked up 85 points to the visitors three by the time the game was brought to an end. With 60 minutes having been played, the points were secured for the hosts.

“It’s a really bad leg break so yes the game was overshadowed by that a bit,” said head coach Alan Low after the match.

“It was a bit of a hard one, with the scoreline being what it was I wouldn’t like to guess what the score would have been at the end.

“Something like that kind of puts things into perspective really and it was a nasty break, so it was certainly the best thing to do to call the game off.

“It was hard to gauge our performance, but once we got going we were reasonably clinical in what we did.

“You look at it two weeks ago they beat Marlow who we lost to, so you don’t know how badly affected they were but the old cliché you can only play what is in front of you.

“We played some good patterns and on the front foot which was nice to see but we weren’t under huge amounts of pressure so we now have to transfer that into doing it under pressure.”

Despite the lop sided score-line there were still areas that Low identified needed working on ahead of their match with Thatcham next weekend.

“We started off quite slowly, we looked at a slightly different warm up this week and we talked to the players about how to get out of the traps a little bit quicker but then the same old story really, we kept giving them the ball for the first five to 10 minutes,” added Low.

“I think the slow starts are a bit more mindset than anything we’re doing it week in week out so it is something we will have to keep ticking over with.

“We’ve got to get out of the blocks a bit quicker, which we did in pre-season.

“All the pre-season games were against slightly harder teams for us and that sort of nervous edge when you know it is a harder game helps you out a little bit.

“We’ve got to get that nervous edge about us every week when we are probably thinking we are in our comfort zone playing someone around us in the league.”
