OVERJOYED Swindon College Old Boys director of rugby Martin Lloyd hailed his troops’ best performance of the season as they romped to a landslide 61-7 success at home to Chesham.

Liam Spillane, Joe Smedly and Charlie Grabe all helped themselves to a brace of tries, with the latter also adding 16 points with the boot.

James McLaughlin, Matthew Allen and Greig O’Brien also touched down as second-placed Old Boys ran in nine tries in all to keep pace with the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Premier leaders Reading Abbey.

“We played some fantastic rugby. It was the best we have played all season,” said Lloyd.

“The forwards were outstanding and the front row in particular were magnificent. They dominated their opposition right from the first scrum and had about seven strikes against the head.

“We dominated the breakdown and won loads of ball which allowed the backs to cut loose and wreak havoc.

“It was really great to watch. It was one of those games when everything you have planned comes off and we took all of our chances really well.

“Our captain, Gareth Davis, was man of the match but I’d like to single out Greig O’Brien who came into the centres and had an outstanding game in midfield.”

Old Boys now have four weeks without a fixture and return to action when they host Gosford All Blacks on Saturday, January 17.

And boss Lloyd has already put plenty of plans in place to ensure his troops are still at the top of their game when they reconvene after the festive period.

Lloyd added: “We have a long break but we will do gym sessions at the Battleground Gym and make it as unpleasant for the boys as we can so they are back up to speed and there are no excuses when we get back.”
