ROYAL Wootton Bassett director of rugby Alan Low insists that his side are not focusing on promotion, despite finding themselves just two points off the summit in Southern Counties North.

The Ballard’s Ash side returned home from second-placed High Wycombe, who head to league leaders Stow-on-the-Wold on Saturday, with an impressive 15-7 success.

“We had a conversation after the game at High Wycombe about where we want to be at the end of the year,” Low said.

“It (promotion) wasn’t in our thoughts at the start of the season and to be honest, it is still not at the front of our minds - what will be, will be.

“What is more important for us as a club is building a solid foundation, improving the thirds and the Colts.

“At the weekend, the thirds had 25 players available and the Colts are putting out two teams.

“The seconds are 13 points clear in their league (Dorset and Wilts 2 North) and had an unbelievable result at the weekend (beating Supermarine seconds 97-0).

“Once we are happy with how our base is, then we can start focusing on the peak - the first team.”

Bassett sealed victory in the first half at a windy Kingsmead Road, with back rower Gavin Ougan crashing over following a lineout before Gary Williamson touched down out wide after the visitors went through a number of phases Meanwhile, Dave Hogg added one conversion and a penalty.

And Low felt that it was one of his side’s best performances of the campaign.

“It was a good day,” he said. “The boys put in a really strong performance and it was the type of character that we have been looking for all season.

“To go there and completely nullify their pack shows just how hard the boys worked.

“It was pleasing to see that the boys are showing more confidence in what we are trying to do week in, week out.”

And while Low says that they are not focusing on promotion, the Bassett chief will be keeping a close eye on proceedings at Stow.

He added: “I think a draw will be a good result for us. We have got Marlow and that is just as important as winning at High Wycombe.”
