SUPERMARINE Ladies are preparing for the biggest game in their 30 year history as they face Darlington Ladies for a place in the final of the National Intermediate Plate.

The South Marston club, of the Championship South, play host to the Championship North side tomorrow and boast a fully fit squad for the contest.

A good atmosphere is anticipated for the game with the club celebrating 30 years in existence, making them one of the longest serving ladies teams in the country, but despite playing in the premiership and having won leagues they have never made it to a cup final.

The team will get a guard of honour as they make their way onto the field and backs coach Gareth Hollis is confident his side can continue their fine league form.

“The club is absolutely buzzing at the moment,” said “Darlington are a complete unknown quantity to ourselves, it is a huge thing a club travelling the best part of six and a half hours down to play us at any time, but add in the significance of the cup.

“The whole youth section are doing a guard of honour for the ladies team coming out, so the support from every level of the club is huge and it is a real big day for the club.

“Our league form has been going good. We have just come off of four wins on the bounce, but unfortunately we lost our last league game in Bath, but Bath are pushing in their last game to win the league on Saturday.

“That has been our only defeat of the year so far, since the turn of the new year.

“So we are in absolutely fantastic form going into it.”

After a bye in their first round of the competition, Supermarine booked their place in the semi-final with a 22-19 win over Championship South East Two side Romford Gidea Park in February.

“Because we are a Championship team we come in a lot later,” added Hollis.

“Romford are a high flying team in their league and came down with really big expectations to beat us and we pulled off an absolutely huge 22-19 victory.

“It was a bit of a nervous finish when they came back to within three points with ten minutes to go but the girls dug deep and defended the 22 like it was their own try-line and a massive turnover at the end booked their place in this semi-final.”

Captain Claire Wilson, is the clubs longest serving skipper having played for the club for five years and is hoping that her side can earn a place in the final as a reward for their efforts so far this season.

“No matter what I am proud of my team and everything they have achieved this year,” she said.

“On Sunday it is just the first of many rewards that can come out of this season.”
