SWINDON warmed up for their South West One East derby with champions-elect Chippenham with a crushing 71-12 success over struggling Buckingham.

The Greenbridge Road side made it three wins on the spin when running in a dozen tries against a side sitting third-from-bottom, with Ollie Wilson leading the way with a hat-trick, while man-of-the-match Adam Gobey bagged himself a brace.

Swindon raced into a 33-0 lead before Buckingham pulled back a converted try on the stroke of half-time.

The hosts continued their dominance after the interval as they racked up their biggest win of the campaign.

“We started off strong and we were playing against the wind in the first half so we knew that we had to keep the ball in hand,” head coach Sean Lynn said.

“We scored three tries in the opening 10 minutes and I have to give the credit to our front five.

“The scrum was very dominant in securing the ball and from there the boys just played with smiles on their faces.”

Swindon also secured the win without their influential skipper and fly-half Adam Westall as he was unavailable due to work commitments, but Lynn was able to bring Cyprus international Cameron Brown out of the midfield to half-back.

“Cameron played well,” Lynn said. “We were missing Adam because he was away with work but Cameron came in and did a good job.

“We picked up a couple of knocks during the game, but hopefully they will be OK for the weekend.”

And Lynn will know that his side will have to be at their best on Saturday as their hosts could seal the title and an immediate return to National Three South West with a bonus-point win coupled with Towcestrians failing to win at Buckingham.

Meanwhile, Supermarine fell to their 20th defeat of their Southern Counties South campaign as they slumped to an 80-8 loss at Frome.

Sean Millwaters’ men have only claimed two points all season and are now preparing to return to Dorset and Wilts One North.

Swindon College Old Boys booked their place in a promotion play-off after a 24-7 win at Wheatley ensured they will finish second in Berks/Bucks & Oxon Premier.
