SUPERMARINE head coach Sean Millwaters is overseeing a rebuilding job at South Marston.

Ahead of their first season back in Dorset and Wilts One North, Marine are taking a new approach after their miserable spell in Southern Counties South last term.

Millwaters’ side were hampered by the loss of eight first-team players before the start of last season and never recovered, losing all of their 22 encounters.

This time around, the head coach insists he is not looking for an immediate return to the higher tier, but instead is looking to blood young players into the first XV and build a stable base for promotion within the next three years.

“We’ve had a big change around with our intentions and how we’re going to move forward,” said Millwaters.

“We’re looking for the next couple of seasons for a rebuild - certainly this season.

“We’re not going to sit here and say we’re going to bounce straight back up. I don’t think we’re ready to do that. We might be, and what happens at the end of the season happens.

“What we’re doing is we’re going to play a lot of our younger lads coming through now. We’d like to be top four, but we’re targeting top six.

“This is to target promotion within three years, but be ready.”

Against Trowbridge II tomorrow, Millwaters will be encouraging his side to focus on their own game.

What the head coach wants to see is his senior players starting to form bonds with the new young faces to build a strong team for the future.

“We’ve recruited a couple of players,” he added. “A guy in the second row called Connor Ward, Mike Baptiste who played for Chippenham in the National Division, and then youngsters coming through.

“Owain Hire, George Russ, who are up from the colts, as well as Mike Smith, Sean Rees, who are still only 18, - so that’s four young guys in our back line. It’s pretty exciting to know these colts are coming through and we think they are ready.”
