SKIPPER Adam Westall lauded his Swindon back-line colleagues as they ran riot in a 10-try rout of Trowbridge on Saturday.

Swindon were in irresistible form with ball in hand as they made it two wins in a row at Greenbridge Road at the start of the season with an emphatic 65-15 victory.

Centre Adam Dobbie led the way with four, wing Oliver Wilson was not far behind on three, while Westall, Jordan Sheppard and Josh Jensen also got over the whitewash as well.

“We are quite blessed at the club at the moment, we’ve got a good 12 guys in the backs who can step into first-team rugby,” said fly-half Westall, who also added 15 points with the boot.

“The guys who took to the pitch on Saturday showed why they are the front-runners at the minute, in terms of selection.

“They ran in an absolute bucketful of points but the ball from the forwards dictates how we play in the backs, so it’s a big credit to them boys too.

“It will be a race for the top try scorer this year, they are highly-competitive guys.

“We want to play well as a team but we also set standards about scoring tries because that’s what we go out to play rugby for. I’m sure they enjoyed themselves in the bar afterwards.”

The victory avenged last season’s 35-22 away loss against the same opposition, a performance Westall described as one of the worst in recent memory.

However, the home side did not get off to the best of starts and Aaron Bray and Shane Johnstone both touched down for Trowbridge in the opening 10 minutes, although Westall did get over the whitewash in between.

From there, though, the visitors could do nothing to halt the Swindon juggernaut as Sheppard, Dobbie and Jensen all dotted down to wrap up the bonus point and build up a 29-10 lead at the break.

Wilson kicked off the surge after the restart for the first of his treble, and Dobbie had also crossed the whitewash again before Trowbridge were able to make further inroads on the scoreboard, with Mark Durant’s try cutting the gap to 53-15.

However, there was still time for Swindon to finish with a flourish and Dobbie dotted down twice more to take his personal tally to four and make it a perfect 10 for the hosts.

Westall added: “We went away to Trowbridge last year and we were diabolical – it was probably one of the worst performances a Swindon side has ever put out.

“On that basis we wanted to set the score straight for ourselves more than anything because we let the club down that day.

“Hopefully we did that on Saturday.”
