SUPERMARINE head coach Sean Millwaters is expecting to know more about his team after this weekend’s match with Chippenham 2nd.

The Supermarine boss said he learnt little from their opening day thumping of Trowbridge 2nd after dropping down to the Dorset & Wilts One North Division.

Millwaters knows to expect tougher challenges than their 79-point romp over the course of the season, starting with Chippenham at home this Saturday.

“I think this week is going to be a far bigger indicator of where we are, playing Chippenham will be much more of a test,” he said.

“You don’t win the league on one game. There are 21 more games to go yet and there are going to be some far stronger teams that we play against.

“You always learn a lot more from a defeat than the other way around.

“We’re happy but we know it is going to get a whole lot harder and I think this week will be a much harder game.”

Millwaters fielded a young side last weekend, which included two teenagers in the front row.

After a disappointing campaign in Southern Counties South last season, where they failed to pick up a single point, the Supermarine chief knows the importance of building a side that can compete next time they get promoted, and will not panic if promotion does not come this season.

“The next two or three years is all about a plan to prepare the team for Southern Counties, because on the two occasions we have gone up before, we have bounced straight back down again because I don’t think we prepared for the league above,” added Millwaters.

“I think the next two years is very much about preparing for the league above.

“When we get to Christmas we will have a much better idea of where we are going to finish this season, but at the moment if we finish between sixth and fourth we will be happy with that season, bearing in mind the number of young players we have.

“Two of the front row on Saturday were both 18/19-year-olds. Apart from the hooker, who is mid-30s in the middle, the two props are very young. It is all pluses.”
