ROYAL Wootton Bassett head coach Alan Low will be calling on the strength of his squad this weekend when they get stuck into the Dorset & Wilts 1st XV Cup .

Low’s side take on fellow Southern Counties South side Devizes in the quarter-finals stage of the competition and will use the game to test the depth of his squad.

With players away on holiday and watching the Rugby World Cup, the Bassett chief will be relying on some of his fringe players.

“We’ll go out and do what we do,” said Low. “I won’t say we are targeting it. It’s a cup game and I think we will go out and play.

“We don’t ever go out there not to win a game and we have got to go out there and do the best that we can do.

“We have got some young players that need developing and it is a great chance for them to go out and get some game-time.

“We had a number of players unavailable last weekend and I think a lot of it is down to World Cup and there is not a lot we can do there.

“We highlighted in the summer that guys were going to be going away at weekends and it was going to be a squad effort across the board.

“We will pick the strongest side we can possibly pick once the guys have come back and competition for places should be high.”

Bassett face a Devizes side who sit top of the Southern Counties South division with a perfect record so far.

However, Low will not be reading too much into that record, given the calibre of side that the Saddlebacks have faced so far this season and will be looking at it as a test for his players.

“They have come down and have had some strong results so far this year,” he added.

“Dorchester cried off against them but then they have played Wimborne and Bradford on Avon, who are both not doing too well this season in terms of results.

“We can’t look too much into that and we’ll just go and play our game and it will be a good tester for our group of players to see where they are against a team that have just come down form where we would like to be.”
