COACH Martin Lloyd is keeping the faith that Swindon College Old Boys’ first win of the season is around the corner, despite their late heartbreak against Wimborne last weekend.

College had lost their opening three matches in Southern Counties South heading prior to this Dorset & Wilts 1st XV Cup clash at Pipers Way before going down 22-20.

“In the last few games, there’s been a nine-point difference, a five-point difference and a four-point difference, and last weekend we had a two-point difference,” said Lloyd.

“We’ve got good players, good strength in depth and we still went out and had a great night out on Saturday, so I’m sure that we’ll get that win sooner or later.

“We missed a penalty right at the end of the game but Charlie Grabe’s kicking was superb all match and we’ve got a lot of players playing well.

“Greg O’Brien and Bruce Vuetanatotoka were great and so were Matt Allen and Tucker Blinkhorn.

“Two penalty tries have cost us in the last two games – that win will come.”

Visitors Wimborne started brightly but College opened their account first, with Charlie Grabe crossing the line down the middle before converting his own score.

Wimborne’s James Williams successfully kicked a penalty to hit back but when the away side had Ben Hunt penalised, Grabe converted to make it 10-3 at the break.

But a period of sustained pressure early in the second period led to William Watson touching down on the left wing and after Grabe clinched another converted try of his own, the deficit was clawed back as Williams converted a penalty try.

Grabe kicked another penalty at the other end but Wimborne’s Jason Llewellyn drove over and Williams converted to put the visitors ahead for the first time.

When the referee spotted an offence with minutes to go, Grabe had the opportunity to win the tie form 40 yards but his attempt sailed just wide.
