SUPERMARINE head coach Sean Millwaters was left purring after his young side assuredly overcame the bruising challenge of Swindon 2nd.

After defeats to Combe Down and Corsham in their last two outings, Supermarine stuck with an inexperienced line-up and Millwaters’ faith was repaid as his team bounced back to winning ways, slamming the door shut on their opponents in an 18-0 triumph.

Both the way in which his young charges stood firm in a physical battle and remained defensively resolute pleased the Supermarine boss, who is hoping his team well on their way to comprehensively coming of age.

“We stuck to our guns in terms of blooding the youngsters and I worked out that 10 of the 18 in the matchday squad had an average age of less than 23,” said Millwaters.

“Swindon came with quite an experienced team and we knew to expect a physical game against them – we said to our lads to forget about the silly stuff and just play rugby.

“It was physical from minute one and there were a few stray elbows and things like that but in the end, I thought that the scoreline flattered Swindon.

“Pete Kewell, who’s only 18, played his first game of the season at number eight and was absolutely outstanding. He was man of the match and for such a young player to do so well in that position was really impressive.

“The way that we defended was probably the biggest plus out of all of it for me too. To be honest, Swindon never looked like scoring at all.”

Lee James and George Cowley both crossed the whitewash as Supermarine cruised to victory whilst Sean Rees kicked a conversion and two penalties.

Elsewhere, Royal Wootton Bassett remain fifth in the Southern Counties South table, a point ahead of Sherborne, despite the postponement of their trip to second-placed Dorset Dockers. The clash has been rearranged for Saturday, November 28.

Touch rugby sessions are taking place every Monday night from 6pm at Supermarine RFC but on Monday (November 16), 02 Touch will send down their mobile disco as a reward for their high attendance levels over the summer.
