ROYAL Wootton Bassett head coach Alan Low is hoping that his team won’t be distracted by all the fun of the fair when they look to edge another step closer to the Southern Counties South title on Saturday.

There will be attractions aplenty taking place at Ballards Ash as the club host their Brighter Futures Family Fun Day, which will aim to raise money towards a £2.9million appeal to equip the Great Western Hospital with a new Radiotherapy Centre, but away from the festivities, Low’s league leaders must focus on the task of tackling county rivals Bradford on Avon.

Bassett, who are seven points clear of second-placed Midsomer Norton, romped to a 53-5 win at Bradford in December but following their display at Dorchester on March 19 – Low’s men won 45-13 – performance is paramount for the Ballards Ash chief.

“I know that the scoreline looked good against Dorchester the other week but our performance was hot and cold and we want to go out and perform for 80 minutes this time,” said Low.

“When we’re playing sides from the top four or five, the guys know that they’re in for a test but sometimes, they don’t have the same approach when they’re playing the teams from lower down in the table.

“At the moment, we’re in a bit of a maintenance phase in training because there are people carrying little knocks because they’ve worked so hard.

“It was very wet when we played Bradford before and we did play some decent rugby but we have to be ready to perform on Saturday.

“Because of our charity day, there’s going to be a big crowd there and fairground rides and pony rides, and we’ll have to try and not get distracted by that – hopefully we can have a good day of family entertainment but play some good rugby too.”

Bassett 2nd will also be in action at Ballards Ash as they host Sean Millwaters’ Supermarine in Dorset & Wilts One North whilst elsewhere, Swindon face a tough task as they look to bounce back from their three-match winless run in South West One East, with table-topping Towcestrians visiting Greenbridge Road.

In Southern Counties North, Swindon College Old Boys are at home to Wallingford.
