SUPERMARINE ran in five tries to get the better of hosts Royal Wootton Bassett 2nd 39-29 in a cracking contest in Dorset & Wilts One North.

Stu Doughty, Robin Smith, Denzil Daniel and Pete Kewell all touched down for Supermarine, who were also awarded a penalty try, while George Russ added 14 points with the boot.

Supermarine head coach Sean Millwaters conceded it was far from the perfect performance from his side but was pleased to get the better of a topsy-turvy encounter.

“It was one of those games where they got in front, we got in front, they got in front again, and then we won it,” said Millwaters.

“If there were any neutrals there then I am sure it was a very entertaining game. It was a nice day and both teams wanted to attack so the ball got thrown around a lot.

“It wasn’t the best game we’ve played but it was some of the best rugby we’ve played.

“There are still areas that we need to work on. We let them score in the first five minutes of each half and each time we scored we switched off for a bit.

“Considering the team we had out, we did really well. We had a few players out and you think going down to Bassett, who are playing well, it could be a tough day for us but the players did very well.”

Supermarine have only one fixture remaining but, due there being an odd number of teams in the league, they will have to wait until April 23 to bring the curtain down on their season.

That match - away at Trowbridge 2nd, will be Millwaters’ last in charge as he has taken the decision to step down at the end of the season.

“I made the decision before Christmas. I just can’t do it with work anymore. I can’t commit to Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays,” said Millwaters.

“You have to get the right balance for yourself and your family. There’s no animosity or anything like that, it’s all amicable.

“I’ve been at the club nine years and I think maybe that’s enough.

“There’s a natural week off now and then we should have been playing Fairford but they pulled out before the season started.

“Instead of a week’s break we’ve got three. It is frustrating as you want to keep playing but it gives everyone a chance to get fit before the last game.”
