SWINDON head coach Sean Lynn took heart from his side’s second-half fightback at Maidenhead after they rallied to leave Berkshire with two losing bonus points following a 34-31 defeat.

Although the result stretches Swindon’s winless run in South West One East to five matches, the performance marks a big improvement on the 72-19 thrashing they suffered at home to league-leaders Towcestrians a week earlier.

Another heavy defeat had looked on the cards for Lynn’s men as they trailed by 19 points at the break but a brave response in the second 40 minutes brought them within three points at the final whistle.

Lynn admitted Swindon were simply not at the races in the first half but he does not think the heavy Towcestrians reverse was in the back of their minds.

“When you look at the scoreboard and see us 19 points down at half-time, how the players reacted in the second half was excellent,” said Lynn.

“We spoke at half-time about how you respond to a situation like that and try to turn it around, and the players did that very well and the fight they showed was excellent.

“I don’t think there was hangover from the previous game, I just don’t think the players turned up. You never like to say that as a coach, but they didn’t.

“If you look at Maidenhead’s track record, they have only lost one game at home this season, so it was always going to be a tough place to go.

“They are a good side and they took their chances, and were too good for us in the first half.”

Adam Dobie led the way for Swindon with a brace of tries, while Ollie Wilson and Josh Jensen also dotted down. Skipper Adam Westall added 11 points with the boot.

Lynn added: “We played some good rugby at times and some of the phases we put together were excellent. To come out with two points from where we were was a decent effort.

“Having someone like Adam Dobie back in the mix us gave us that go-forwards, which is what we needed, and once we have got that, then we’ve got someone like Adam Westall, who can open up any team.

“I thought Ash Taylor did superbly as well. He came on in the second row and played one of his best games for a long time.”
