SWINDON College Old Boys will be hoping that they can haul themselves off the foot of the Southern Counties North table and give their chances of survival a shot in the arm.

The Pipers Way outfit entertain Beaconsfield tomorrow in the final game of the season and director of rugby Martin Lloyd is confident that his side can bring the curtain down on a difficult campaign in style.

Should College claim only their fourth league win of the term, they could leapfrog Drifters, providing they don’t taste victory themselves on their trip to Marlow.

With the league make-up still to be decided, Lloyd hopes that his team, who were promoted from Berks/Bucks and Oxon Premier 12 months ago, will be given another chance in the Southern Counties league.

“Personally, I would like for us, if we can, to stay at the highest level we can,” Lloyd said.

“As a club, who doesn’t have a clubhouse, we have always punched above our weight.

“We are confident that we can bounce back from this season.

“We have won three matches at this level and, with a bit of extra commitment and a few new faces, then I’m sure that we can prove ourselves in this league – which I believe is the right one for us.

“At the moment, if we win against Beaconsfield then we are unlikely to finish bottom and then it will be interesting to see how the leagues are restructured.

“Nobody knows at this stage whether one or two sides that will go down.”

Whatever level College find themselves at next season, Lloyd is hopeful that they can rediscover the formula that brought them success in the two years previous.

“We have some talented individuals at this club but that will only get you so far,” he said.

“Teams that stick together and train together will see success – we know that it happened in the past for us.

“However, when you are an amateur club it can be hard.

“Sometimes players have to work on Saturdays or in the evenings, then there are also family commitments – we understand that.

“It can be very frustrating to see the talent not being fully utilised.

“Two seasons ago we were one game from Twickenham and then last year we got promoted.”
