SWINDON got their season off to the perfect start when they saw off Grove on the opening day of the South West One East campaign.

A trio of tries for Sean Lynn’s team from Ash Taylor, Sam Williams and new boy Jon Morrison proved enough to beat Grove 22-15 on a dismal Saturday afternoon.

Head coach Lynn was more than happy with his team’s performance, especially after grinding out a win in such poor conditions.

“We always knew the first game was going to be hard against Grove, it is always a tight and close game when we play them,” said the Greenbridge Road chief.

“What was nice to see was we ground out a win. It wasn’t pretty due to the weather, the conditions were awful.

“We showed good character to come through and get the win, so we can’t not be happy with that.”

Despite the win, Lynn is more than aware of what his team will face this year, admitting the South West One East division is as tough as it ever has been.

He also acknowledged his team will still need time to bond ahead after the introduction of five new players in the starting team.

“It’s going to be tough so I’ll take any win, really. From my point of view, on Saturday we had five new players in the starting side,’’ he added.

“It’s just a case of working together and trying to find out our different combinations. Hopefully we have a bit of strength in depth so we can take each game as it comes.

“I was happy with the win, you take them as they come this year. I think it will be a really tough league because there are a lot of local sides and the three sides who have come down into our league.”

Swindon will now turn their attention to Saturday’s game against Maidenhead, who also managed to pick up a win on Saturday, beating Royal Wootton Bassett 20-19.
