ROYAL Wootton Bassett head coach Alan Low believes his players do not need to be told what to do in order to make a success of life in South West One East.

Last Saturday Bassett claimed a first win at their new level following the 2015/16 title-winning season in Southern Counties South, edging to a hard-fought 14-13 success away at Newbury Blues.

They will now attempt to follow it up with a maiden home success of the campaign this weekend when they welcome Old Centralians to Ballards Ash, although another nail-biter is likely to unfold as the visitors travel to Wiltshire with an unblemished record so far.

Although preparation, selection and tactics fall on his shoulders, Low says he does not need to rule with an iron fist.

Instead a key principle behind Bassett’s success in recent years is the fact that the players take on collective responsibility for the team’s fortunes on the field.

“I’m into my fourth year in charge now and I don’t have to be a drill sergeant because we’ve developed a squad and it’s more about making little adjustments and keeping the culture of the side going,” said Low.

“We’ve done all of our hard work to get to where we are now and it’s about maximising that.

“The boys know what they have to do and if they’re beaten in a game, they’re beaten by the better side on the day.

“We won the league last year on merit and things have been going really well for us recently.

“We’ve got a great win against Newbury and now it’s about establishing ourselves in this league – that has to be the aim for us.”

Meanwhile, as part of the club’s beer festival this weekend, Bassett’s newly-established fourth team will be taking on a team from Honda in a social match on Friday night (kick-off 7.30pm).

Swindon will be looking to make it two wins out of three this term when they host Newbury Blues on Saturday.

Sean Lynn’s side suffered a 29-17 defeat at Maidenhead last time out but were victorious in their previous match at their Greenbridge Road home, seeing off Grove 22-15 in the season opener two weeks ago.

Like Swindon, Newbury have one win and one defeat this term, although their defeat was only by a single point at home to Royal Wootton Bassett last Saturday.
