ROYAL Wootton Bassett are proving they are not fooling around this season after completing a 77-0 rout against Oxford Harlequins on Saturday.

Alan Low’s side have taken to the South West One East like a duck to water following their league winning campaign last season in Southern Counties South.

Following their narrow defeat at home to Maidenhead, who are leading the way with five wins out of five, on the opening day of the season, Bassett have gone on to win their next four, the easiest of which coming on Saturday at Ballards Ash.

However, skipper Dave Hogg is not getting carried away by their start and is just concentrating on their performances.

“It was as comfortable as the scoreline suggests by the end but at the start they put up a good fight,” he said.

“As the points started racking up, their heads started to go down.

“The game went the way we wanted it to. The performance was there, which was the main thing – we are always looking for the performances and then we are sure the results will come like it did at the weekend.

“We kept it as professional as we could and kept to the game plan as much as we could. We didn’t want to throw the ball around, we just wanted to go through our patterns.

“I was a little surprised by the score but I don’t like looking into results too much because we don’t know what they had in their team.

“We just take it week-by-week and don’t look into the results. The boys did everything that was asked of them so I can’t complain.”

Bassett finished last season with five wins on the bounce en route to the title and Hogg said his side were keen to carry that form into this season, with a gruelling pre-season now paying dividends for the club.

“I am really delighted with how we have started the season but we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves,” he added.

“It’s just rolling on from last season. The performances were there last term and we just wanted to crack on with that, we didn’t want to have a slow start.

“I think the mood is the highest I have seen it at this club.

“Playing at the level we are playing at and getting some of the results we are, everyone is just working hard for each other.”
