SUPERMARINE head coach Nigel Hire is keen to see his team to build up a head of steam by following up their first win of the season with another victory against Melksham this weekend.

Marine got their Dorset & Wilts One North off the ground in earnest at the fourth attempt by beating Royal Wotton Bassett 2nd 22-13 last Saturday and tomorrow, they roll out the red carpet for Melksham, who are also coming off the back of their first success of the campaign.

Hire’s troops were due to travel to west Wiltshire but the two teams’ meetings for the season have been reversed, with Melksham unable to provide adequate facilities as they wait for construction on their new ground to be completed.

“We’ve reversed the fixture because they’ve got issues with their new clubhouse being ready, so we’ve actually got Melksham at home,” said Hire.

“We’re really looking forward to that one and we really do need to go for another win to build a bit of momentum going forward, so that’s what we’re aiming for.

“Then we’ve got the cup game (in the quarter-finals of the Dorset and Wilts Senior Vase) the following week.

“You never quite know in the cup and we’re playing Weymouth (& Portland), who’ve got a long way to travel.

“We’re focussed on Melksham at the moment and we really do need the win against them – we’ll go on from there.

“Having lost the first couple of games; I think in any sport in any league, you need to get the first win and you need to build from there, which is why how we performed was more important.

“Obviously, we wanted to win but we really wanted a good performance as well to build on the performance.

“The win was a big bonus and everyone’s quite buoyed at the club and keeping that going is quite important – confidence matters, at the end of the day.”

In the near future at least, Marine will have to do without the services of number nine Owain Hire – the coach’s son – who broke his ankle against Bassett, and Peter Kewell, who suffered a broken finger.

Chief Hire added: “That’s rugby. We’ll have to make do and do what we can to get over it.”
