THE league table may only be in its infancy but Swindon College Old Boys director of rugby Martin Lloyd is predicting that there will be a clutch of teams in the hunt for the title this term.

College, who have also bested Corsham in the Dorset and Wilts Cup, have kicked off their Berks/Bucks & Oxon Premier campaign with two wins from as many games – their clash with Alchester on September 10 didn’t take place after the Oxfordshire outfit withdrew from the league.

Lloyd’s side beat Tadley 41-30 last weekend and while the season is barely a month old, the College chief says that he’s already keeping an eye on how the other title-chasers are progressing.

“It’s been a fantastic start,” said Lloyd.

“We’re absolutely aware of what the problems are in the league. We’re not the only ones that are going well.

“There’s other teams that are going really well – Didcot are going really well, Hungerford are going really well and Drifters are playing well – so it’s going to be between us four, I think, but it’s difficult to tell this early in the season.

“We’re keeping an eye on them but the other teams I’ve mentioned; they’re scoring big and doing well.”

College make the trip to Buckinghamshire to take on Chesham, who have also won their opening two games, on Saturday.

Lloyd said: “It’s a long journey up to Chesham. I think they’ve won twice but the scores have been fairly close, so we don’t know what we’re going to face.

“They’re always an honest side. They always compete and they don’t have any real strengths .

“Their main strength is their team unity, so they’ll take some breaking down if we’re going to get a result.

“You’re confident but you know that it’s always a potential banana skin, so we’ll have to see what happens.

“We’ve got some unavailability this Saturday coming because it’s the family and work and things like that, so we’re not taking the same team with us on Saturday.

“It’s early in the season but we're just seeing how things pan out.”
