SWINDON College Old Boys put in a faultless performance at the weekend as the advanced to the second round of the Dorset & Wilts Vase with a crushing 27-0 win at Lytchett Minster.

Despite not knowing what side his team would face, College director of rugby Martin Lloyd was happy with how his team adapted to their opponents in thrashing rain.

“It was grand. We didn’t know too much about them but we did know they’d done okay in the league,” said Lloyd.

“But when we got down there, we found that they were very strong up front and we had to work really hard to contain them in that area.

“Most of their stuff was power-based from a scrum or a pick and go, so it was fairly slow but very powerful.

“We try and play a fast, wide game and they struggled to contain that but the conditions in the second half didn’t suit our style of play we had a deluge.”

In a dominant performance, Lloyd’s team claimed their cup victory through Tucker Blinkhorn, who scored two tries, while Mark Edmonds and Kevin Scott also got over the line, with Florin Palcau converting two and scoring a penalty.

“We had a couple of guys who really stuck out for us, Drew Blinkhorn, who is Tucker’s brother, looked really good as a loose forward,” added Lloyd.

“He was tenacious in everything he did, he looked the finished article so there will be a lot of people looking over their shoulders now.

“Tucker got two tries and his running in the centre was outstanding, he’ll always get you across the line.

“With Drew and Tucker playing in the centre, I would say they are good enough for anyone their defence was outstanding and they were breaking the line at will.”

College Old Boys will now have to travel to Bradford on Avon on November 12 and Lloyd is under no illusions it will be a tough game for his team.

“They’re a really good side and they are going well but you have to beat the better sides if you want to do well in the cup, we’re doing it the hard way, so we will have to wait and see what happens,” he said.

Nigel Hire’s Supermarine were also involved in Vase action this weekend as they hosted Weymouth and Portland but it was the visitors who progressed after claiming a 50-14 victory.
