SWINDON College Old Boys continued to show why they are top of the class in Berks/Bucks and Oxon Premier this term as they ran in 10 tries against fellow high-flyers Drifters in a 56-12 win.

Drifters arrived at Pipers Way at the weekend having won four of their five games this term to put them second in the table.

However, Mark Lea’s men have a near-perfect record this season and put in another stellar display to make it six wins from six, having only failed to pick up the four-try bonus point at Chesham last month in a 22-11 success.

While College have been acing all their examinations to date, Lea felt it was this win over Drifters – who slipped to third after the defeat – was the most pleasing.

“Everything seemed to click on Saturday,” Lea said. “From start to finish, we played a brand of rugby that we wanted to play.

“The lads played with a smile on their faces and executed the game plan to the letter.

“What was pleasing was that the 10 tries weren’t scored off the first phase. We had to go through six or seven.”

College, whose 2nd XV romped to a 123-0 win at Westbury 2nd in Dorset and Wilts Three North, opened up a 36-0 lead by the interval before adding four more tries in the second period to seal the rout.

In-form Tucker Blinkhorn ran in four tries, while Charlie Grabe helped himself to a hat-trick. Retiring lock Richard Smith bagged a brace on his final appearance for the club with Nick Tuckett completing the 10.

Grabe took his tally for the match to 19 points as he kicked two conversions, while Florin Palcau also added the extras to one of the scores.

“Richard has been at the club for over 10 years and does a lot of the work that goes unseen,” Lea said. “You really do notice when he’s not on the pitch.

“He’s going to be missed but I think it is starting to take its toll on him now.”
