SWINDON College Old Boys extended their perfect start to the season with a huge 102-8 win over league strugglers Phoenix.

Charlie Grabe led the way in the 16-try rout with four, while Bobby Tilling bagged a hat-trick.

Kevin Scott and Michael Calvert grabbed a brace apiece, while Eoin Crean, Tucker Blinkhorn, Florin Palcau, Simon Addis and Damon Murphy also crossed.

Grabe also added 11 conversions to take his personal haul to 42 points.

Despite the emphatic victory, director of rugby Martin Lloyd was full of admiration for their Berkshire opponents.

“It was a bit of a crazy one. To be fair to Phoenix, they came down and they only had two first team players eligible to play,” said Lloyd “They came with a much-weakened side. I suppose it would have been easier for them to forfeit.

“They came off with a lot of respect from us.

“It would have been easy for them to get frustrated but they didn’t. They stuck through it, so fair play to them.”

Lloyd also praised Terry Gibbs as he stepped up from the 2nd XV, who currently lead the way in Dorset and Wilts Three North, to make his first team debut.

“It’s very difficult to assess where you are with a game like that. There are a couple of teams at the bottom of the table who have been struggling,” added Lloyd.

“One of the things we said we wanted to do was to stick through our process and not allow that to be disrupted.

“At the end of the day, you’ve got to play what is in front of you and the guys did well. We spent some time on some set moves that worked well “If you score 102 points, then you have to be in good shape. One player who stood out was Terry Gibbs.

“He was making his debut in second row. He was absolutely outstanding and his work-rate was phenomenal.”

Elsewhere, Supermarine didn’t have such an enjoyable weekend as they were beaten 53-26 by Swindon 2nd in Dorset and Wilts One North.

Mike Baptiste got two tries, while Matt Huggins and Owain Hire were also on the scoresheet as Matt Moulton added the conversions.
