SWINDON will be hoping that the incentive of winning a local derby will help get their South West One East season back on track tomorrow.

Following their 21-10 home loss to Banbury last Saturday, Sean Lynn’s men make the short trip to Allington Fields to face Chippenham.

The Greenbridge Road side’s hosts, however, will be full of confidence after they defeat local rivals Royal Wootton Bassett 32-15 last weekend.

Swindon also enjoyed a win over Bassett - beating them 17-5 at the start of November.

Chippenham’s director of rugby John Brown is no stranger to Swindon having held a similar role at Greenbridge Road.

Meanwhile, Bassett head coach Alan Low doesn’t see any reason to sniff at his side’s current league standing, despite their recent wobble .

Last season’s Southern Counties South champions have lost four of their last five outings, slipping to a 32-15 home defeat at the hands of Chippenham last weekend, but they still find themselves fourth in the table.

Bassett won six of their opening seven matches as they returned to the sixth tier and as well as becoming the only side to best leaders Old Patesians so far this term, they also inflicted defeat on third-placed Newbury Blues within that sequence.

“If someone had offered us this position at the start of the season, we would have bitten their arm of for it,” said Low. “We’re the only team that has beaten Old Pats at Old Pats and we’re one of the only ones that have beaten Newbury at Newbury, too.

“It’s not been a bad start to the season at all and we’ve only got a few more games before the Christmas break, so it would be nice to sign off with some good results.”

Bassett were missing a raft of regular first-teamers through injury and unavailability as they went down to Chippenham and they hope to at least have Dan Rees, Ieuan Clements, Simon Anderton and Jordan Rye back in contention for tomorrow’s assignment at seventh-placed Grove.

However, chief Low admits that his team’s trip to Oxfordshire is something of a step into the unknown.

The Bassett coach said: “To be honest, I don’t know a bit about them.

“I’ve been there once before but that was a long time ago.”
