ALAN Low thinks his side must learn from their Swindon counterparts’ killer instinct if they are to stave off relegation from South West One East.

Royal Wootton Bassett suffered a last-gasp defeat to their local rivals at Ballards Ash last weekend, a result that leaves Bassett just a point off the bottom two.

Having started the season with just one defeat in their opening seven outings, relegation in their first season up looked unlikely but Low is aware that it is a distinct possibility, having seen his side not pick up a win in their last four outings.

“We’ve got to move on, hold our heads up because we had a really good performance and we’ve got to build on that,” said Low, whose side travel to Windsor this weekend.

“It’s going to be hard to pick the boys back up this week because we should have come away with a W last Saturday.

“Both scores were against the run of play last weekend, but you accept it. If you start dwelling on things like that, that’s when mistakes creep in.

“Every game has been a tough game and you are as good as your last result.

“We’ve got to stop looking at October and September and how good we were then and we’ve got to address things and get those things put right.

“We have shown that we can compete in this league and more than compete but we have to be able to string those performances together.

“With a young side, it’s finishing games. When I was at Swindon, the number of games we won with Westy (Adam Westall) at 10 in the last two minutes, I think one year we won three on the trot with the last kick of the game.”

Bassett have been ravaged by injury in their first season back in South West One East, but with the treatment room slowly dispersing, a return to fitness for some key individuals could be coming at the ideal time.

“We had some boys come back in on Saturday,” added Low, who was dealt the blow of losing skipper Dave Hogg on the eve of the Swindon game.

“Kyle (Lovell), Chris Patterson and Josh McCafferty, all of them have been injured for some time.

“To have all those boys back in the mix, and Ash Stephens as well, it’s a big plus for us.

“We saw the difference they made last weekend.

“Hogg is a big loss, to lose him last Friday night. Sam Robinson had an exceptional game on Saturday.

“It’s big boots to fill, losing your county captain, but was superb last weekend.”
