ROYAL Wootton Bassett head coach Alan Low is aiming to finish the season in the same manner as they started life in South West One East.

Having been promoted from Southern Counties South last season, Low’s side suffered just one defeat in their opening seven games.

That run proved pivotal to Bassett’s battle for survival as an injury crisis saw Low’s side win just once in 11 games and tumble down the league.

Back-to-back wins for the first time since October have seen Bassett pull clear of the drop zone but Low knows the job is far from done.

“Last weekend’s win over Banbury was a really important win, they all are,” he said.

“We want to finish off well. We know we struggled in that middle section of the year and we really want to cement our place in this league and show how well we can compete and where we should be.

“The challenge will be to get that consistency across the whole year, with that depth as well in the whole squad.’’ “Rather than the 20 players we have got at the moment, we need to extend that depth down to 25 or 30 players, which is key.”

Bassett travel to local rivals Chippenham this weekend, who sit four places and five points below them.

And having seen a makeshift team fall to a 32-15 defeat in the reverse fixture, Low is hoping a more familiar starting line-up will lead to a better contest this time out.

“It’s a nice fruity derby,” he added.

“We were disappointed with our performance at home against them but you look at the squad we had out on that day and there were some interesting selections from us that day,’’ he added.

“We picked up injuries that day and I think we had half of our pack playing in the backs, so it will be nice to get those boys back into the pack with strength out wide as well.”
