SWINDON skipper Mike Thompson believes his side have the momentum to complete the great escape in South West One East – although he admits they will be hard pushed to continue their winning run this weekend.

Thompson led his troops to a fifth successive victory last Saturday with a 36-17 success away at Stratford Upon Avon.

That has fired Swindon seven points clear of the bottom three, a fine effort considering they won just four of their first 17 league fixtures.

Swindon face a stiff test of their superb recent run tomorrow when they travel to second-in-the-table Banbury.

However, with home games against the bottom two sides, Grove and Bicester, still to play in their run-in, Thompson has high hopes that there will be little worry of relegation at Greenbridge Road come the end of April.

“We’re probably going to go to Banbury with people carrying a few bumps and bruises. It was going to be a tough game even without that, but we will just go there and see what we can do,” said Thompson.

“It is difficult to say we are going there targeting victory but if we can come back with something, then I will be happy.

“We have got four weeks left and we just want to try to get another couple of wins under our belt.

“We have two more games at home which are against Bicester and Grove, who are both below us, so if we win those, then we should be okay.

“We knew these previous five games had to be the turning point and if you’d offered us a win in all five at the start, we’d have snatched your hand off.

“Having that bit of consistency in the team has helped and there is a real good feeling in the camp right now. We’ve got a bit of confidence back and all the credit has to go to the lads.”

Having had no fixture last weekend, Royal Wootton Bassett return to action in South West One East with a Wiltshire derby away at third-placed Chippenham.

Elsewhere, Swindon College Old Boys will look to claim a first victory in Southern Counties South since January 13 when they play host to North Dorset.

Supermarine go on the road in Dorset & Wilts One North and travel to third-in-the-table Avonvale.
