Bassett youngsters finish runners-up


WOOTTON Bassett under 12s were runners-up in the Dorset & Wiltshire Cup Final.

Four teams, Oakmeadians and Wimborne from Dorset and Chippenham and Wootton Bassett from Wiltshire, played a round robin festival to determine the overall champions across the two counties.

Bassett started with a fiercely contested clash against Wimborne.

Wimborne got off to the better start, having most of the territory in the first few minutes of the match.

Bassett defended well and following a clearance kick, the resulting ruck was won by Bassett and scrum half Harry Read, fed fullback Tom Fieldsend, who broke two tackles and sprinted to the line to score. Wimborne responded with a well-worked try of their own through the forwards and the match finished in a 5-5 draw.

Next up for Bassett was local a local derby against Chippenham, who played some lovely rugby as they won 10-0.

In a must-win final match against Oakmeadians, Bassett made heavy going of the early stages.

Sam Fry scored three tries to help Bassett to a 15-0 win.

Chippenham won the overall competition with Bassett in second.

n CIrencester under 15s saw off Chippenham under 15s, 27-7.

Evan James was firing on all cylinders as he picked up a hat-trick of tries.

Joe Sutcliffe and Jake Horwood scored the other tries as Cirencester wrapped up a convincing win.
