Swindon St George fail to win

SWINDON St George failed to emerge with a win after they were given a tough draw in the pre-season Cheltenham Rugby League Festival.

Swindon took the lead in their first match against the Royal Navy through an interception try from Miles Bennett, but their opponents came back to win the game 20-4.

The Dragonslayers were 10-0 down at half time against the University of Gloucestershire but came back in the second period when Liam Davies and Josh Haynes touched down.

Two interceptions allowed the students to take the game by the scruff of the neck and emerge 22-8 winners.

Swindon picked up a number of injuries in the first two games, leaving them with just 10 fit players for their final two games.

Woody Briggs’ try was the bright spot of Swindon’s 14-4 defeat to Warrington outfit Lymm, as he drove through four tacklers to touch down from short range.

The Dragonslayers took the lead in their final game against the University of Bristol when Martyn Wakeley broke the defensive line following a pass from Jake Wojtowicz.

They extended their lead just before half time as captain Richard White had a clear run in to score his first try for the club.

But injury-hit Swindon had only six fully fit players in the second half and Bristol University took full advantage to win 18-8.

St George take on Gloucester Warriors in a friendly at Croft Sports Centre on Saturday (kick-off 2.30pm).
